Writing for High School (rolling admissions 2024-25)

High school writing is tough—but students can learn the skills necessary to succeed. This ten-session series of 1-1 sessions for rising 9th and 10th graders will strengthen student skills, build confidence, and empower students as they head into their freshman or sophomore year.

Topics covered depend on each student’s skill set and learning needs, but may include some combination of the following:

  • critical thinking and answering questions with focus and clarity

  • figuring out where to start and avoiding the “stuck” feeling

  • supporting ideas with evidence and creating strong “evidence sandwiches”

  • organizing ideas (avoiding repetition, stating clear topic sentences, etc.)

  • basic essay structure and implementing it in various contexts

  • creating interesting, meaningful hooks

  • writing and submitting a critical essay to The New York Times Summer Reading Contest

(For the kind of voice-driven writing that students will need on admissions essays, cover letters, presentations, and more, check out Writing for Your Future Self.)

Registration deadline: May 15. Space is limited.
